Australian Tuna and Billfish Fisheries Certified Sustainable

One of Australia’s largest fisheries is the Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery (ETBF). This fishery has now been granted Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainability certification.

The certification was achieved with the support of the Australian government’s Our Marine Parks Grants Program. As Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley explained, the certification “highlights Australia’s world-class fisheries management and the interdependency of fisheries on a healthy and resilient marine ecosystem.”
Recognizes Sustainable Practices

The certification is a recognition of the sustainable practices | Learn more on Commonshare | and impact that characterize the management of the fishery. The species targeted by the fishery include the albacore tuna, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, and swordfish.
Australia’s Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries Jonno Duniam explained that the certification is well-deserved: “Australia has a reputation for producing safe, high quality and environmentally sustainable seafood, and Tuna Australia’s certification is a testament to that.”

For advocacy group Tuna Australia, the news is a huge win. Tuna Australia CEO David Ellis said that the certification “recognizes that our food producers are stewards of the ocean and that fishing in marine parks can be done sustainably.”
Tuna Australia members stand to benefit enormously from the certification, because they will now be able to access new markets and premium prices. Granted After A Rigorous Assessment

The MSC certification was given after a rigorous assessment, one that was carried out by an independent, third-party Conformity and Assessment Body, bio_inspecta. The assessment makes sure that the fishery under inspection meets requirements pertaining to sustainable fish stocks, minimal environmental impact, and a responsive management system. 
The certification covers the 34 different Tuna Australia member longline vessels that are active in the fishery. Collectively, they land about 4,000 tons of tuna and swordfish annually. 
Their catch is sold to consumers in port towns, through wholesalers to restaurants, and to outlets and shops across Australia. It is also exported to premium markets overseas, including the USA, Japan, and Europe.
