From the fields to the organic food store, the 2018 Organic Grower Summit covers practically every facet of the organic market. Co-presented by CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) Certification Services and the OPN (Organic Produce Network), the Monterey-based Summit is two days of education, information, and networking opportunities.
CCOF Certification Services, LLC is co-presenting the Organic Grower Summit as part of its commitment to providing personal, accessible organic certification services. For CCOF, growers are more than clients: they are company partners who warrant personal attention and service.
Scaling Up Healthy Soil Practices
The first educational session at the Summit(1) ( #The first educational session at the Summit ) will be “Scaling Up Healthy Soil Practices,” a two-and-a-half-hour workshop that will explore the efforts of the State of California to use grants to promote water conservation, healthy soil, manure management, and farmland conservation. The workshop will also explore biofertilizers and soil amendments for organic market agriculture.
Fertility management for organic crops and others
The second session for the 2018 Organic Grower Summit will explore the topics of fertility management for organic crops, as well as strategies for managing insect pests and diseases under organic certification.
Leaders in the industry will offer insights into maintaining the health of organic crops using only organic-certified agents and ecologically-based approaches to promote health and control pests and disease. They will also discuss new agronomic tools and organic products.
Maintaining the health of organic crops
A third educational session will feature a candid conversation with two members of the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB)(2) ( #the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) ). These speakers will offer information about how the Bard makes recommendations for practice standards and materials for organic production.
This session offers a special “Meet the Grower” opportunity for attendees to meet with a team of Costco buyers responsible for purchasing organic produce, dairy, meat, and wine.
The new ways in which organic growers
Technology will be the subject of another session, focusing on the new ways in which organic growers with operations of every size are making use of technology to a greater extent. The key idea of this session will be that technology is not only for large growers, and can be quite relevant for smaller operations as well.
John Foraker: The keynote speaker for the event
The keynote speaker for the event will be John Foraker, co-founder, and CEO of Once Upon a Farm, known for its organic cold-pressed baby food. Foraker has more than 30 years of experience in the organic market and is particularly known for his role as CEO of organic food brand Annie’s, Inc., from 1999 to 2017.
