Despite its small size, Costa Rica is a highly productive and competitive pineapple producer, with nearly 42,000 hectares under cultivation. Worldwide, demand for pineapples has risen by about 300% since 2000, and Costa Rica has emerged as a world leader in production.

Costa Rican growers are well-equipped with production technology that allows them to produce a high tonnage of pineapples per hectare. Costa Rica’s geographical location on the Central American isthmus operates in their favor as well: the port cities are very close to the fields.

Other emerging markets that have been touted as significant pineapple producers include Colombia and Ecuador. However, compared with Costa Rica, these countries lack the combination of highly productive technology and a geography that favors rapid transit from the fields to the ports.

Costa Rica’s advantages, and the efforts of the growers, have quite literally borne fruit. Between 2001 and March of 2017, Costa Rica’s pineapple exports rose from 25 million to 200 million boxes. Some 90% of all pineapples sold in the United States(2) ( #90sold ) are Costa Rican.
