Eastman Chemical Company Demonstrates Sustainable Technologies at Conference

Plastics have become notorious for environmental pollution, waste, and hazards to the health of humans and of wildlife, but Eastman is one of the companies that has stepped up to try to improve the situation. 
The company has utterly reinvented material production processes, introducing Advanced Circular Recycling technologies that are designed to make use of waste plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills.
The whole idea of the circular economy is to recycle materials rather than allowing them to be thrown away to clutter up a landfill or end up as litter elsewhere in the environment – in rivers, the ocean, etc. 
Specifically, the company has introduced carbon renewal technology (CRT) and polyester renewal technology (PRT). Both of these technologies make use of plastics that have been difficult to recycle by hitherto existing, conventional means.
Carbon renewal technology takes mixed waste plastics that would otherwise have ended up in landfills and uses them to generate synthesis gas (syngas) for use in the company’s products. 
Overall, the significance of this technology is that instead of going into the landfill as clutter, the plastics are turned into useful items with a high amount of recycled content. 
The process of polyester renewal technology (PRT) uses glycolysis to disassemble waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic and then turn it into circular polyesters. 
Crucially, the quality of the finished product is not compromised at all: it is perfectly functional as well as being a win for the environment.  
The company is also working on a next-generation version of the polyester renewal technology, one that will use methanol to break down the waste polymers. It is expected to be fully operational by 2022. 
This is not the first time in recent history that Eastman has made a splash showcasing its sustainable solutions and products.

At that show, the company introduced some cutting-edge products. 
A case in point is Eastman’s next-generation Trēva™ engineering bioplastic. This is a product that made with a combination of biobased and certified recycled content. 
They also introduced Cristal Revēl™ copolyesters, a new line of proprietary post-consumer recycled content (PCR) compounded polyesters. These are another big win for sustainability, particularly thanks to their use of recycled content.
Given the threat posed to the environment and to human and ecosystem wellbeing by waste plastics, Eastman’s innovative products and processes are doing vitally important work for sustainability. 
Indeed, what Eastman has achieved is a good example of the future of sustainability: a focus on eliminating harmful wastes by reusing them and turning them into new useful items, over and over again.
