MTU Empowered by Growing Hydrogen Propulsion Consensus

MTU Aero Engines is making great efforts to develop hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel for air transport | #Hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel for air transport |, and toward that end has started engineering work for its joint project with the DLR German Aerospace Center to convert a Dornier 228 regional airliner.
They expect to start ground testing subsystems during the second quarter of 2021 and to have their first flight in 2026.

Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft

The aircraft is a 19-seat plane that has already been procured. It will have one of its two Honeywell TPE331 turboprop engines replaced by a 500-kW electric propeller motor, powered by energy produced by hydrogen fuel cells for sustainable travel | Learn more on Commonshare |.
MTU will provide the propulsion system, while DLR will be responsible for systems integration and certification. The partners will use the project, funded by the Bavarian state government, to validate MTU’s powertrain architecture.

Hydrogen Fuel Options

According to MTU, direct combustion of liquid hydrogen in gas turbine engines is a potentially faster way to adopt the alternative fuel. Dr. Stefan Weber, senior vice president of technology and engineering advanced programs, says that the required changes to the combustion chambers of engines could be made within a few years to allow for relatively easy modification of existing aircraft.
However, there are significant changes needed to the plane’s fuel supply system and infrastructure for this to work, so it is necessary to consider overall environmental impact.

Hydrogen May Be Fuel of the Future

This week, MTU welcomed Airbus’s announcement of plans for its ZeroE program, which will develop three possible concepts for hydrogen-powered airliners carrying between 100 and 200 passengers on flights up to 2,000 nm.
“Hydrogen is a highly attractive future option for us as an engine producer as well,” explained MTU chief operating officer Lars Wagner. “It should be used as a fuel right away.”
