Growing demand for organic and sustainable pasta
As demand for pasta products accelerates in the U.S. and many other countries rise, organic, sustainable pasta is burgeoning as well.
The Pastaria Festival and the big business
In 2017 the Pastaria Festival, a festival in Italy devoted to pasta, there was a conference entitled Organic Supply Chains in the Pasta Sector. Speakers at the conference included Simona Caselli, agriculture counselor for the Emilia-Romagna Region in Italy, as well as Silvio Grassi, owner of pasta company Molino Grassi, and Francesco Pantò, director of product development for the industry-leading company Barilla, among several others.
As the above names indicate, organic, sustainable pasta is increasingly big business, and this means more buying options than ever.

Like other organic products, organic pasta in the U.S. must be certified by one of the eighty different USDA-accredited certifying agents. These agents are authorized by the USDA to certify to the U.S. Department of Agriculture | Learn more on Commonshare | (USDA) standards | Learn more on Commonshare |, and most are directly accredited by the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP). Additionally, 21 certifying agents are authorized by means of recognition agreements made between the United States and other governments.
Pasta's Commercial Item Description (CID):
The USDA has issued a Commercial Item Description (CID)(6) | #Commercial Item Description (CID) | for pasta products which includes organic pasta. Under this CID, pasta may be labeled as organic if its ingredients were grown in keeping with organic agricultural practices.
In order to be labeled as organic, then, a pasta product must be made exclusively with ingredients that have been produced, handled, and labeled in keeping with USDA organic regulations. As seen, there must be a certification of the practices in question as organic. There must also be a Certificate of Organic Production or Handling to verify that the pasta product was in fact entirely processed and handled in keeping with the standards specified by the USDA’s organic regulations.
The agreement between the United States and the European Union
By agreement between the United States and the European Union, ever June 1, 2012, USDA organic certification and the organic certifications of the various European Union countries are mutually recognized as equivalent. Thus, USDA-certified organic pasta from the U.S. may be purchased in EU member nations, and organic pasta certified in any one of the member nations of the EU may be purchased in the United States.
